With Redbull Elevation Tour, Kokanee Crankworx, Canadian National BBQ Championships and many more great events summer in Whistler is starting to rival the winter for popularity. As the summer gains in popularity every company doing business in Whistler has had to adjust its philosophy to suit. Many companies used to simply shut down for the summer season but now most focus on summer traffic. Ski rental shops become bike rental/tour providers and the cross country ski trails turn into a golf course.

Although much of the traffic to Whistler in the summer is Canadian based, summer has challenged the way Whistler taxi companies do business. At Resort Cabs we used to be able to rest some of our fleet for the summer…now we are lucky if we can pull one into the shop for servicing. Whistler is no longer a winter town…golf, mountain-biking, beaching and hiking have made it truly a four season resort.

Most employers would love to look at your resume before you arrive, maybe chat on the phone and sometimes even offer you a position. Whistler is a place that is consistently looking for employees so all year long you’ll be able to connect with any Whistler company’s Human Resources department. Don’t be shy either; ask potential employers about their company, what they do and whether you’d be a fit.

At Resort Cabs we are really big on finding the right people to work in Whistler. You may never have considered driving a taxi. You are not alone; 11 of the 326 drivers that have worked at our Whistler taxi company have driven a taxi in the past. So why have so many with so little taxi experience chosen to drive taxi during their Whistler working holiday? Three things: Money, Flexbility and Fun.

Money: There are many jobs in Whistler at which you can take home $9/hr to $13/hr. Most of these jobs are great but the wage is set and the employee has no ability to increase that wage. There are jobs that you can dramatically effect your earning potential. Taxi Driving, Serving Tables and Bartending are jobs in which the worker takes gratuities as part of their wage. Work hard, offer great service and you can make a tremendous amount of money driving taxi.

Flexibility: Night jobs are at a premium in Whistler. Drive a taxi and you’ll have lots of time to spend on the hill riding.

Fun: If you like meeting new people and working with a great team Whistler Resort Cabs is a great place for you. Every year the vast majority of the people who drive taxi in Whistler say, “this is the best job I have ever had!”

I trust that some of the information here has been useful. Be prepared when you come, find a job that you can take gratuities and consider driving a taxi.

Why would anyone pay for their bike to have a seat on the bus? Unfortunately, that is just what the bus companies taking you to Whistler want you to do. Taxis in Whistler are set-up to take you 5 friends, your bikes and all your gear in one trip. You need to have your bike in a box when travelling by air, the same is true with a taxi. Box your bike, book your taxi at www.resortcabs.com, get on the plane, land at the Vancouver International Airport, get in your yellow taxi, unload in Whistler and ride the Whistler Mountain Bike Park immediately. Don’t forget your full-face and your pads the park is burly, burly, burly.

Employment in Whistler - Drive a taxi

Every year thousands of people come to Whistler to live and work in one of the world’s finest recreation playgrounds. Whether skiing, snowboarding, mountain-biking, rockclimbing or apresing on patios Whistler has become the place to be.

It would seem that a small town with so much would be well staffed. The fact is Whistler’s help wanted section is 6 pages long. Businesses from large to small are having to work incredibly hard to fill their employment requirements. Resort Cabs HR director Jessica Meadows said “we have been creative with our recruiting but its a big job. There are so many great jobs in Whistler that sometimes you feel like the potential employee is interviewing your company. We have been lucky, we have great people but we can always use more”. As the town turns over and prepares for the summer season housing is starting to soften so its a great time to move into town. Looking for a job? Call Jessica Meadows at 604.938.1500.
